Thiruvannamalai is one of the 'Panchabhootha'   sthalams (sites)  .The Panchaboothams represent the five basic elements of life viz.air,water,fire,earth and sky. Here  God incarnate as 'Agni' (Fire) is believed to reside.
Situated at the foot of a hill , the Thiruvannamalai temple is  one of the most important Saivite temples in the south.
Arunachaleswara is the main deity of the temple. The temple  is dedicated to Lingodbhava or Jyothir Lingam.
The magnificent  gopurams of the temple present a majestic sight.
